How To Clean A Bubbler
You can clean a bubbler using a cleaning solution, or you can make some yourself (a mix of ⅓ water, ⅓ isopropyl alcohol, and ⅓ salt). Make sure to empty the bubbler completely before cleaning. Place the solution in a container such as a Tupperware, and submerge the bubbler into the mix. Close the top of the container and shake it around gently. Now, remove the bubbler and use a pipe cleaning tool or a cotton swab to remove the remaining gunk. Dump out the dirty cleaning solution and repeat if necessary.
How To Use A Bubbler
Using a bubbler is easy! Make sure there is enough water in the chamber. Usually, ⅓ full is enough. Place your ground cannabis into the bowl next. Following that, light the ground cannabis flower in the bowl while placing one finger (typically the thumb) over the carb (the small hole near the bowl). This will control the airflow. Finally, hit the bubbler and remove your finger from the carb when you’ve pulled enough smoke. Now clear the rest of the smoke, and repeat!
How Much Water Do You Put In A Bubbler?
The rule of thumb is to make sure the downstem is submerged. If there isn’t one, you can fill your bubbler about ⅓ of the way with water. Some bigger bubblers may work best when filled halfway, but you should never need more than that amount.
How Much Does A Bubbler Cost?
The cost of a bubbler varies in price. However, at Marijuana Packaging, you can buy a bubbler for as little as $5.00.

What Is A Bubbler?
At a glance, mini bongs and bubblers look like slightly larger glass spoon pipes. However, they feature a much larger base (water chamber) for storing water, in addition to a downstem. The main features of a weed bubbler include a:
- Glass Bowl: a small, rounded container that holds your marijuana in place
- Carburator: small hole on the side of the bowl for controlling airflow
- Downstem: glass tube that connects the bowl to the water chamber
- Water Chamber: rounded space in the weed bubbler for holding water
- Chamber (Neck): hollow glass neck that connects the bowl to the mouthpiece (Note: This part is extra long on a sherlock pipe)
- Mouthpiece: the end of the weed bubbler where you inhale
How A Weed Bubbler Water Pipe Is Made
Glassblowers use traditional glass blowing techniques to craft unique bubblers for weed. In fact, the process for creating glass pipes and bubblers for sale are very similar.
The craftsmen start by heating up a tube of glass. From there, they can either separate the heated tube in half to create two pipes or use the entire tube for a larger piece. In either case, the next step is the “neck stretch”.
The “neck stretch” is the part of the process where the glass blower heat ups the tube as they slowly stretch, spin, and extend the glass to create the main chamber or neck of the pipe. This is what forms the foundation for the traditional pipe shape. Once the glassblower feels satisfied with the length and shape of the pipe, they move on to the next step -- shaping the bowl.
To create the bowl, the craftsmen apply heat to the closed end of the tube while blowing cool air directly into the open end of the glass tube. This causes a small bulb to gradually form at the closed end. As the bulb continues expanding, the glassblower continuously rotates the glass to preserve a clean, even shape.
In the case of creating a bubbler water pipe, the glassblower would spend extra time creating an extra-large bulb large enough to contain water. Once completed, the next step is the bowl push. During the bowl push, the craftsmen use a special tool to press down and create a basin in the center of the bulb. From there, a rod is used to create the hole in the bottom of the bubbler bowl, as well as the carb and mouthpiece holes.
For bubblers, the artisan also fuses a downstem to the bottom of the bubbler bowl to bridge it to the water chamber. With this addition, the glass pipe is transformed into a glass bubbler.
The last finishing touches include shaping the mouthpiece, smoothing rough edges, and pressing the pipe down on a flat surface to create a level bottom. Creating the flat bottom is essential, as it’s what prevents a bubbler water pipe from tipping over when placed on a surface.
History Of The Bubbler
To fully appreciate the bubbler water pipe for everything it is, it’s important to understand where it came from. Before cheap bubblers, there were glass pipes, and before that, there were even more old-school versions of pipes.
However, what might truly surprise is the fact that Scythian tribal chieftains once toked up with golden bongs over 2,400 years ago. Yup, according to Russian archaeological findings, our ancestral stoners were blazing it up with shiny gold water pipes over two millennia ago.
But let’s fast forward to more recent times, like the 16th century. At this point, bamboo bongs had taken over Central Asia by storm as the choice smoking tool. And it’s believed that it was the Ming Dynasty of China who helped popularize and spread the use of bamboo bongs across the land.
That said, both before and after that period, several variations of pipes came into existence. From wooden, stone, clay, and corn cob pipes, to coconut and metal pipes.
And for some time, those were the go-to methods for blazing up. Right up until the 1970s, the era and introduction of glass pipes and bongs. This is when glassblowers really began pushing the barriers of glassblowing techniques.
Craftsmen like Bob Snodgrass played a major role in spreading the glass bong wave, especially with his contributions of popularizing the use of high-grade borosilicate glass, in addition to the fuming technique -- a technique that implements gold and silver during the glassblowing process to fuse colors into the glass.
From here, glass pipes and bongs were springing up left and right across the country. And it wasn’t long before glassblowers asked the fateful question, “what if we fused a bong and pipe together?” And just like that, bubblers for weed began popping up in head shops everywhere. Fast forward to present times, and you can find countless styles of just about any bubbler, pipe, chillum, or bong you can imagine.
How a Bubbler Works
Bubblers work by combining the features of a water pipe and glass pipe together. Water pipes diffuse smoke through water to create a smoothed, cool hit, while glass pipes preserve the taste and “purity” of your marijuana.
Here’s a breakdown of what the process looks like:
As you spark up the bowl of your bubbler bong and inhale, smoke gets pulled down into the water chamber through the downstem. This produces the water diffusion that water pipes are known for.
And as you continue drawing in smoke, it collects inside the chamber. From there, the smoke continues traveling upward through the neck of the pipe.
When you uncover the carb hole and inhale, all of the collected smoke will quickly flow out through the mouthpiece, creating a smooth hit that only glass bubblers for weed can provide.
How To Smoke With A Bubbler
To smoke with a bubbler bong you just need a few things:
- Bubbler
- Grinder
- Water
- Lighter or Hemp Wick
- Rolling Tray
Here’s a step by step breakdown of how to smoke with a bubbler:
- Use your grinder to grind up your weed
- Empty the grinder out onto your rolling tray into a pile
- Fill your bubbler pipe with water to about half the length of the downstem
- Gently pack the ground marijuana into the bowl of your bubbler
- Light pat the bowl with your finger to even it out
- Pick up the bubbler, and cover the carb hole with your thumb
- Use your lighter or hemp wick to light the bowl as you slowly inhale through the mouthpiece
- Continue milking the mini bubbler to collect smoke in the chamber -- you’ll hear a light bubbling sound as you do this
- To take the hit, take your thumb off of the carb hole and begin slowly inhaling
- Keep inhaling until the mini bubbler is cleared to take in all of the smoke
- Repeat steps 6-10 to finish the bowl

Does My Head Shop Need Bubbler Pipes?
Yes, every head shop should carry cool weed bubblers in their collection. Smokers love having variety. And sometimes, smokers want to buy both bongs and pipes at the same time, but may not be able to afford them. Rather than losing out on making a new customer happy, why not offer them something that combines the best of both worlds on a budget?
Bubbler pipes are great for stoners who want an affordable pipe that smokes like a bong but feels just as portable as a regular glass pipe. A hand bubbler serves as the perfect solution. A cheap bubbler pipe works great for anyone who wants a relaxed, low heat smoking experience on the go. You get the clean-tasting, pure hits of a glass pipe, mixed with the cool, and extra smooth tokes of a water pipe. All in a pipe small enough to fit in your hand.
As a head shop owner, stocking up on cool weed bubblers is a great decision, as it helps you accommodate a wide demographic of customers. From new smokers looking to spice up their sessions to veteran smokers looking for more discrete and functional ways to enjoy all the benefits of water pipes.
A portable bubbler bridges the gap between two popular smoking methods and fuses them into a cool, compact, and versatile smoking tool. Can’t decide if you want to start your day with bong rips or bowl hits?
Is A Bubbler For Weed Better Than A Regular Pipe?
Yes, and here are a few reasons why bubblers are better than regular pipes:
- An upright bubbler diffuses smoke through water to cool it down, making it gentler on the lungs to inhale
- Water diffusion helps filter out ash that you would otherwise inhale
- You can easily bring your sherlock bubbler on the road as it’s compact and portable
- Double bubbler pipe helps preserve the taste of your weed while creating a smoother smoking experience
- They work like water pipes but are small and discrete like glass pipes
Those are a few of the surface-level benefits of smoking with a bubbler bong over a glass pipe. But really, it comes down to your personal preference.
Maybe you want something that’s even smaller than a pocket bubbler to keep your smoke sessions low-key. In that case, choosing a glass pipe makes the most sense. On the other hand, maybe you want a smoke that feels cooler to the lungs and cleaner on the inhale. Instinctually, you’d choose a bong, but maybe you don’t want to lug something around that’s so big. So if you want something portable that basically works just like a bong, using a bubbler bong makes the most sense.
The important thing to remember is that bubblers serve to combine the convenience of glass pipes with the water cooling benefits of water pipes. If that’s what you look for in a smoking session, then using a glass weed pipe makes a lot of sense. You’ll have a smoking tool that you can bring with you to group seshes, on the road, or just enjoy in the comfort of your home.
